My oldest friend Sylvain and his wife Fabienne run the guesthouse “Le Nid d’Omer” with a small holiday home in Brittany. They also have their dog Ulys and their cat Thaly. The accommodation is located about 50 km northwest of Nantes in the small town of St. Omer de Blain, on the Nantes a Brest canal. It is a small, quiet place, away from the large tourist crowds, perfect for relaxing. We rented a room there for a week and went on tours in the area. It was not the classic Brittany tour, which we had already done ten years ago. We explored the surrounding area more because we wanted to spend time with our lovely hosts.

Our first trip took us to the La Gacilly photo festival (including contributions by Ulla Lohman) and to the town of Rochefort-en-Terre.

It is only a short walk from the Nid d’Omer to the canal. There you can walk or cycle along the dyke from lock to lock.

A hike in St. Dolnay. Pines, Heather, and solar powered farms.

If you travel through Brittany, you have to go to the seaside. We decide on the seaside resort of Le Croisic with the mussel hunters at low tide, the changing huts, the beautiful villas on the coast. The salt fields of Guerande are also very close by. Unfortunately, due to the heavy rain this summer, no fields are ready for the salt harvest.

“You are not born Breton, you become one, listening to the wind, the song of the branches, the song of men and the sea.”

Xavier Grall, breton writer and poet, 1930 – 1981
